Kalamazoo County’s new $95-million Justice Facility broke ground in spring of 2021 and is expected to see construction completed by 2023. The five-story, 165,000 square-foot building is being built next to the County’s Administration Building, and will consolidate services currently housed in three separate buildings. The new facility will house the county’s courts, the prosecutor’s office, and other criminal justice-related offices. The building has a basement with secure underground parking, seven elevators, and an enclosed rooftop mechanical penthouse.
The six levels of structural steel framing – 5 floors plus rooftop penthouse level – are supported on a main level post-tensioned concrete structure that frames the basement level. The steel structure includes braced frames for laterally stability, and is supported on deep foundations including auger-cast piles and pile caps up to 60” thick at the braced frames and elevator cores.
